Tenements

Definition

Tenements are multi-occupancy buildings meant to house as many families as possible, often in poor conditions. They were common during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Analogy

Think of tenements like a can of sardines. Just like sardines are packed tightly into a small can, families were packed into these buildings with little space or privacy.
