Atomic weapons, also known as nuclear weapons, are explosive devices that derive their destructive force from nuclear reactions. These reactions release vast amounts of energy from relatively small amounts of matter.
Think of atomic weapons like a super-powered firecracker. A regular firecracker uses a chemical reaction to create a small explosion. An atomic weapon, on the other hand, uses nuclear reactions to create an explosion millions of times more powerful.
Fission: This is the process by which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei along with some byproducts. This is one method used in atomic weapons to release energy.
Fusion: Fusion is another type of nuclear reaction where two light atoms bond together, or fuse, to make a heavier one. It's another method used in more advanced types of atomic weapons.
Manhattan Project: This was a research and development project during World War II that produced the first atomic bombs.
