Proxy wars are conflicts where major powers instigate or aid smaller groups or nations to fight on their behalf, rather than engaging directly.
Think of a proxy war like two puppet masters controlling their puppets. The puppet masters (major powers) don't fight each other directly but use their puppets (smaller groups or nations) to carry out the conflict.
Cold War: A period of geopolitical tension between the United States and Soviet Union following World War II, characterized by ideological conflicts and proxy wars.
Vietnam War: An example of a proxy war during the Cold War era where North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, fought against South Vietnam, backed by the United States.
Arms Race: A competition between two or more states for military supremacy. During a proxy war, major powers often supply weapons to their proxies as part of this competition.
