Julius Nyerere was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, politician, and political theorist. He served as the first Prime Minister of independent Tanganyika (1961) and later became the first President of Tanzania (1964-1985). He is known for his African socialist policies, collectively known as Ujamaa.
Think of Julius Nyerere as the captain of a newly formed sports team. Just like how a captain would lead their team to play by certain strategies and rules, Nyerere led Tanzania with his unique strategy - Ujamaa.
Ujamaa: This is an African socialist policy that promotes familyhood. It was introduced by Julius Nyerere in Tanzania after its independence.
Pan-Africanism: A worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diaspora ethnic groups of African descent.
Decolonization: The process by which colonies become independent from their colonial rulers. This happened in many African countries during the 20th century.
