Humanistic Theories of Personality

Definition

These are psychological perspectives that emphasize the study of the whole person and believe individuals have free will. They focus on human potential and the importance of growth and self-actualization.

Analogy

Think of a tree growing from a seed. It has all it needs within itself to grow into a full, mature tree, but it also needs sunlight, water, and good soil. Similarly, humanistic theories suggest we have innate capacities for growth but need positive conditions to reach our full potential.
