Adrenal Glands

Definition

These are small glands located on top of each kidney. They produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions.

Analogy

Think of the adrenal glands as a personal trainer in your body's gym. When you're facing a stressful situation (like lifting heavy weights), they pump out adrenaline to give you an energy boost and prepare you for action.

Adrenaline: A hormone produced by the adrenal glands that increases rates of blood circulation, breathing, and carbohydrate metabolism and prepares muscles for exertion.

Cortisol: A steroid hormone released by the adrenal glands which plays a role in the body's response to stress.

Epinephrine: Another term for adrenaline; it is secreted by the adrenal glands, especially in conditions of stress, increasing rates of heart beat, metabolism, and muscular readiness.
