The vii (seven) chord, also known as the leading tone triad, refers to the triad or seventh chord built on the seventh scale degree of a major or minor key. It has a strong tendency to resolve to the tonic.
Dominant function: The vii chord shares dominant function with the V chord by creating tension and leading back to the tonic.
I (tonic) chord: The vii chord's resolution is most satisfying when it resolves directly to I (the tonic), completing the musical phrase.
Diminished triad: The vii chord is often a diminished triad, consisting of two minor thirds stacked on top of each other.
