Geometric Boundaries

Definition

Geometric boundaries are straight lines (or arcs) drawn on a map without regard for physical or cultural features. They often follow latitude or longitude lines.

Analogy

Picture geometric boundaries like the gridlines in an Excel spreadsheet - they divide up space into neat squares regardless of what data is in each cell.

Related terms

Artificial Boundaries: These are man-made divisions which may not have any relation to physical features at all.

Antecedent Boundary: A boundary line established before an area is populated.

Subsequent Boundary: A boundary line established after an area has been settled that considers the social and cultural characteristics of the place.
