Disamenity zones are areas not connected to city services and under the control of drug lords or gangs. They often have poor living conditions and are typically found in rapidly growing cities in developing countries.
Think of disamenity zones like a neglected garden within a well-maintained park. The rest of the park is flourishing with regular maintenance, but this particular garden has been ignored, leading to overgrown weeds, litter, and overall decay.
Slums: These are heavily populated urban residential areas consisting mostly of closely packed, decrepit housing units in a situation of deteriorated or incomplete infrastructure.
Favelas: A Brazilian shack or shanty town; a slum. This term is used for the squatter settlements that are common on the outskirts of many Brazilian cities.
Informal Economy: Economic activity that is neither taxed nor monitored by a government; as opposed to a formal economy.
