Definition

The Encyclopedie was a general encyclopedia published in France between 1751 and 1772 with later supplements included. It represented a comprehensive work of knowledge accumulated at that time.

Analogy

Consider the Encyclopedie as Google in book form back in its day. Just like we use Google today to find information about almost anything under the sun, people used this encyclopedia for their queries back then.
