Effects of Nationalism

Definition

The effects of nationalism refer to the outcomes or consequences that result from a strong identification with, and loyalty for, one's nation. These can include unification, independence movements, cultural pride but also xenophobia and conflict.

Analogy

Think about being a super fan of your favorite sports team. Your support (nationalism) can lead to positive effects like community bonding and increased merchandise sales (unification, cultural pride). But it could also lead to negative effects like rivalries or fights with fans of other teams (xenophobia, conflict).

Related terms

Patriotism: Love for or devotion to one's country. It is related but not identical to nationalism as it does not necessarily imply an assertion of superiority over other nations.

Xenophobia: Dislike or prejudice against people from other countries. This can be an unfortunate effect of extreme nationalism.

Secessionist Movements: Movements that seek separation from an existing nation often driven by distinct ethnic, religious or regional identities. This can be seen as both a cause and effect of nationalism.
