Balance

Definition

Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight within a composition. It creates stability, harmony, and equilibrium by arranging elements with equal visual weight on either side of an imaginary center line.

Analogy

Think of balance as balancing on one foot while holding heavy weights in each hand. You need to distribute your weight evenly so that you don't tip over. Similarly, in art, balance ensures that no single element overwhelms the composition.

Related terms

Symmetry: Symmetry is a type of balance where elements are mirrored or repeated on both sides of an imaginary center line.

Asymmetry: Asymmetry is another type of balance where visual weight is distributed unevenly but still achieves equilibrium through careful arrangement.

Radial Balance: Radial balance occurs when elements radiate outward from a central point, creating a circular or spiral pattern.
