Isotopes

Definition

Isotopes are variants of a particular chemical element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei. This results in isotopes having the same atomic number but different mass numbers.

Analogy

Think of isotopes like different models of a car brand. All models display the brand's logo (protons), indicating they belong to the same brand (element), but each model might have a different engine size or features (neutrons) that make them unique in weight and performance, while still being recognized as part of the same family.

Related terms

Atomic number: The total number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.

Mass number: The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus, representing the mass of the atom.

Radioisotope: A radioactive isotope that has an unstable nucleus and decays over time, emitting radiation
