power

Definition

Power in the context of sociology, especially within government and politics, is the ability or capacity of a person, group, or institution to influence or control the actions, beliefs, or behaviors of others. It is a fundamental concept in understanding how societies function and are structured around hierarchies and relationships of authority.

Analogy

Power in society can be likened to electricity flowing through a city's power grid. Just as electricity energizes buildings, streetlights, and homes, enabling them to function as intended, power in social contexts energizes political structures, institutions, and individuals, allowing them to influence societal norms and individual behaviors.
