Pertaining to Switzerland or its people. In AP US History, the term is less frequently encountered but can refer to Swiss immigrants who came to America for economic opportunities.
Think of the Swiss as a group of skilled watchmakers (Switzerland is famous for its watches). They decide to move their shop from a small town (Switzerland) to a bustling city (America) where they believe there's more opportunity for success.
Immigration Act of 1965: A law that abolished an earlier quota system based on national origin and established a new immigration policy based on reuniting immigrant families and attracting skilled labor to the United States.
Assimilation: The process by which immigrants become part of the mainstream culture of their new country, often losing aspects of their traditional culture in the process.
Cultural Pluralism: A condition in which many cultures coexist within a society and maintain their cultural differences.
