Definition

The Spanish-American War was a conflict between Spain and America in 1898 over control of Cuba. The war ended with America gaining several island territories including Guam, Puerto Rico, and Philippines.

Analogy

Imagine two kids fighting over who gets control over a treehouse (Cuba). In this case, one kid (America) ends up winning not only the treehouse but also some toys (Guam, Puerto Rico & Philippines) from the other kid (Spain).
