The Shakers, officially known as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearance, were a religious sect that emerged during the 18th century. They believed in communal living, pacifism, and celibacy.
Think of the Shakers like a sports team where everyone shares responsibilities equally (communal living), refuses to fight with other teams (pacifism), and focuses solely on their game instead of dating (celibacy).
Communal Societies: These are groups of people who live together and share property, resources, and often work tasks.
Pacifism: This is an ideology that opposes war or violence as a means of settling disputes or gaining advantage.
Celibacy: This is the state of voluntarily being unmarried, sexually abstinent, or both.
