Definition

The Republican Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, founded in 1854 to oppose the spread of slavery into new states and territories.

Analogy

The Republican Party is like a popular sports team that was formed to challenge the reigning champions (the Democrats). They have different strategies and players, but they're all playing in the same league (political system).
