Definition
In AP US History, Japan refers not only to the island nation itself but also its interactions with America including immigration patterns, trade agreements, wars/conflicts like World War II.
Analogy
Imagine Japan as another student who started off quiet but later became one of your main competitors for valedictorian (World War II). They also have family moving into your neighborhood (immigration) and you both participate in school fundraisers together (trade).
