Definition

Indigenous people are the original inhabitants of a region or country, before the arrival of colonizers and immigrants.

Analogy

Think of indigenous people like the first player in a board game. They were there from the start, they know all the rules (or traditions), and have been playing (living) on that board (land) long before any other players joined in.
