Huey Long's Share Our Wealth Society

Definition

The Share Our Wealth Society was a program proposed by Senator Huey Long during the Great Depression that aimed to redistribute wealth in America by taxing the rich heavily and providing every family with a house, car, radio, etc.

Analogy

Imagine if there was only one pizza for your entire class party. Instead of letting one person eat all of it, Huey Long’s Share Our Wealth Society would be like making sure everyone gets at least one slice.

Related terms

Redistribution of Wealth: This is similar to sharing out slices of pizza equally among friends so no one goes hungry.

Populism: Like being voted 'class favorite', populism involves appealing directly to ordinary people who feel their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups.

Great Depression: Again, this is akin to returning back to school after summer vacation - but imagine if the school had no resources and everyone was struggling.
