Fort Necessity

Definition

Fort Necessity was a hastily built British fort where George Washington suffered his first military defeat in 1754 during the French and Indian War.

Analogy

Think of Fort Necessity as a pop-up tent that you set up quickly when it starts raining on your camping trip. It provides some shelter but isn't as sturdy or protective as a well-built cabin; similarly, this hastily built fort wasn't able to fully protect Washington's troops from the French forces.
