Anti-Union Techniques

Definition

Anti-union techniques refer to strategies used by employers or companies aimed at discouraging employees from joining or forming labor unions.

Analogy

Imagine you're trying to build a sandcastle on the beach but someone keeps knocking it down - that's what anti-union techniques are like for union formation. They're actions taken by employers designed specifically to prevent or disrupt the creation or functioning of worker's unions.

Related terms

Union Busting: This is a range of activities undertaken by employers, often with the assistance of outside consultants hired specifically for this purpose, intended to disrupt or prevent the formation of trade unions.

Right-to-work laws: These laws prohibit agreements between trade unions and employers making membership or payment of union dues compulsory. In essence they make it harder for unions to maintain membership and financial support.

Lockout: A lockout is an action taken by an employer during a labor dispute designed essentially 'lock out' employees from their workplace until certain terms are agreed upon.
