Sukarno was the first President of Indonesia, serving from 1945 to 1967. He played a key role in leading Indonesia to independence from Dutch colonial rule.
Think of Sukarno as the captain of a sports team who leads his team to victory against a much stronger opponent. Just like this captain, Sukarno led his "team" - the people of Indonesia - to independence against their colonial rulers.
Nationalism: A political ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion or allegiance to a nation or nation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests.
Decolonization: The process by which colonies become independent of colonial rule.
Guided Democracy: A term used by Indonesian President Sukarno for his political concept where decision-making is concentrated in the hands of a guiding power while maintaining some form of representation or consultation.
