Spread of Islam

Definition

The spread of Islam refers to how Islam expanded from its birthplace in Arabia across Asia, Africa and Europe through trade routes, conquests and missionary activities from 7th century onwards.

Analogy

Imagine if one person starts playing an incredibly catchy song at a party. Soon enough others start humming it too; some even take it back with them and play it at their own parties (trade routes). Before long this song becomes popular all over town (the world), not because everyone was forced to listen but because they genuinely liked it (conquests vs missionary activities).
