The Sepoy Rebellion was a violent and very bloody uprising against British rule in India in 1857. It's often considered to be the first Indian war of independence.

British Raj: The rule by the British Crown on the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947, which followed after suppressing the Sepoy Rebellion.
East India Company: An English company formed for pursuing trade with East and Southeast Asia but ended up seizing control over large parts of Indian subcontinent.
Indian National Congress: A political party that was founded in 1885 with aim to obtain a greater share in government for educated Indians, which later led India to its independence from British rule.
