Sokoto Caliphate

Definition

The Sokoto Caliphate was an independent Islamic Sunni Caliphate in West Africa that was founded during the jihad of the Fulani War in 1804 by Usman dan Fodio.

Think of Sokoto Caliphate as a successful start-up company. It started from scratch (through a jihad or holy war), disrupted the existing system (local Hausa kingdoms), and quickly grew into one of the most powerful states in the region.
