The Ottoman Millet System was a method of administrative control in the Ottoman Empire where religious communities (millets) were allowed to govern themselves under their own laws.
Think of the Ottoman Millet System like a school with different clubs. Each club has its own rules and activities, but they all belong to the same school and follow some general guidelines set by the school administration.
Jizya: A tax that non-Muslims had to pay in Islamic states, including during the time of the Ottoman Empire.
Devshirme: This was a practice by which the Ottoman Empire took Christian boys from their families, converted them to Islam, and trained them for civil or military service.
