Historical Context

Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, reigned as the monarch of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. His rule began after the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War and during a period of internal strife known as the Fronde. Louis XIV ascended to absolute monarchy amidst these challenges, with his reign exemplifying absolutism in Europe. His court at Versailles became a center of political power and cultural life.

Historical Significance

Louis XIV's reign significantly shaped French statecraft, culture, and influence in Europe. By centralizing authority and promoting the divine right of kings, he established a model of absolute monarchical rule that impacted other European nations.
