Lateen Sail

Definition

A lateen sail is a triangular sail set on a long yard mounted at an angle on the mast. It was used primarily in the Mediterranean Sea during medieval times but has been adopted worldwide due to its advantages in maneuverability and ability to sail against wind.

Analogy

Imagine trying to move your shopping cart full with groceries against a crowd in supermarket aisle. If you try pushing it straight ahead (like square sails), it's tough. But if you angle it diagonally (like lateen sails), you can navigate more easily - that's what lateen sails do for ships!

Related terms

Rudder: A flat piece hinged vertically near stern of boat or ship for steering.
