Ilkhanate

Definition

The Ilkhanate (1256–1335) was a khanate established from southwestern territories conquered by Mongols. It covered much of present-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and western Pakistan.

Analogy

Imagine if your high school football team not only dominated their league but also started teams in neighboring towns that were just as successful. That's kind of what happened with Ilkhanate - it's an offshoot from a larger entity that managed to carve out its own territory and identity.
