French West Africa was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin) and Niger.
Imagine French West Africa as a big puzzle with each piece representing a different territory. The puzzle is held together by the box - France. Each piece has its own unique characteristics but they all fit together under one entity.
Imperialism: A policy or ideology of extending a country's rule over foreign nations, often by military force or by gaining political and economic control.
Decolonization: The action or process of a state withdrawing from a former colony, leaving it independent.
Scramble for Africa: The invasion, occupation, division, and colonization of African territory by European powers during the period known to historians as the New Imperialism (between 1881 and 1914).
