French colonial rule

Definition

French colonial rule refers to the period between the mid-19th century until 1954 when France controlled Vietnam. During this time, Vietnam was part of French Indochina, a federation of French colonies and protectorates within Southeast Asia.

Analogy

Imagine if your neighbor suddenly decided they were going to control how you run your household - what you eat, when you sleep, even what language you speak. That's kind of like how it was under French colonial rule for Vietnamese people.
