Definition

This refers to the practice by which nations create settlements in distant territories for purposes such as resource extraction, trade expansion, or strategic advantage over other nations.

Analogy

Think of establishing colonies like opening up a chain of restaurants. The main restaurant (the mother country) sets up smaller versions of itself (colonies) in different locations to expand its reach and influence, and to gain access to new resources (like customers or ingredients).
