A caravanserai was a roadside inn where travelers (caravaners) could rest and recover from the day's journey. They were commonly found along the Silk Road in Central Asia and the Middle East during medieval times.
Think of a caravanserai as an old-timey truck stop. Just like modern truck stops provide fuel, food, and rest areas for long-haul drivers on highways, caravanserais provided similar services - food, water, shelter - for merchants traveling along trade routes.

Silk Road: An ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West from China to the Mediterranean Sea.
Trade Route: A logistical network identified as a series of pathways and stoppages used for the commercial transport of cargo.
