Boyar Class

Definition

The Boyar class was a privileged social class of high-ranking nobility in Russia, second only to the ruling princes, from 10th through 17th century.

Analogy

Think of the boyars as the VIPs at a concert. They have special access and privileges that regular attendees don't have, but they're still not part of the band (the ruling princes).

Related terms

Serfdom: This is a status of peasants under feudalism, similar to slavery. Serfs were often under control of boyars in Russia.

Tsar/Czar: This is an Eastern Slavic title that signifies an autocratic ruler. The Tsar was above the boyars in social hierarchy.

Duma: A Russian assembly with advisory or legislative functions. The term comes from the Russian verb "dumat" ("to think" or "to consider"). Boyars were often members of this council advising Tsar.
