Biafra Secessionist Movement

Definition

The Biafra Secessionist Movement was a political and military effort from 1967 to 1970 by the Igbo people in Eastern Nigeria to secede from Nigeria and form their own independent nation, called the Republic of Biafra.

Analogy

Think of this like a group project where one member feels they're not being treated fairly or their ideas aren't being considered. They decide to leave the group and start their own project instead. That's what the Igbo people tried to do with the Biafra Secessionist Movement - they wanted to create their own 'project' (country) separate from Nigeria.

Nigerian Civil War: This was a civil war in Nigeria fought between the government of Nigeria headed by General Yakubu Gowon and the secessionist state of Biafra led by Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970. It's like an intense tug-of-war game that lasted for three years.

Igbo People: The ethnic group primarily living in southeastern Nigeria who led the movement for secession. They are like members of our hypothetical group project who felt undervalued and decided it would be better off on their own.
