Theoretical Probability Distributions

Definition

Theoretical probability distributions describe the probabilities of different outcomes for a particular event or experiment based on mathematical models rather than actual data.

Analogy

Imagine you're playing a board game with dice. The theoretical probability distribution would be like knowing exactly how likely each number is to come up before you even roll the dice, based on their design and structure.

Related terms

Empirical Probability Distributions: These distributions are based on observed data rather than mathematical models.

Normal Distribution (Gaussian Distribution): A specific type of theoretical probability distribution that has a bell-shaped curve and is commonly used in statistics.

Binomial Distribution: Another type of theoretical probability distribution that describes the number of successes in a fixed number of independent Bernoulli trials.
