Stemplots

Definition

Stemplots (also known as stem-and-leaf plots) are graphical displays that organize numerical data by separating each value into two parts - a stem and one or more leaves. They allow us to see both individual values and patterns within the data.

Analogy

Think about organizing your collection of trading cards. You group them by their first digit (the stem) and then list all the remaining digits (the leaves) next to it. This way, you can easily see which cards have similar first digits and identify any outliers.

Related terms

Boxplots (or Box-and-whisker plots): Graphical summaries that display key features such as median, quartiles, minimum, maximum, and potential outliers.

Measures of Central Tendency: Statistical measures like mean, median, and mode that represent typical or central values in a dataset.

Variability/Spread: Descriptive statistics such as range, interquartile range (IQR), variance, and standard deviation that quantify the spread or dispersion of data.
