Scatterplots

Definition

Scatterplots are graphs that display the relationship between two quantitative variables. Each point on the graph represents a pair of values, one for each variable.

Analogy

Imagine you have a scatterplot of the number of hours students study and their test scores. Each point on the graph is like a student's data point, showing how much they studied and what score they got. The scatterplot helps you see if there's any pattern or relationship between studying and test scores.

Related terms

Outliers: Data points that are significantly different from other points in a scatterplot.

Positive Association: When an increase in one variable is associated with an increase in another variable.

Negative Association: When an increase in one variable is associated with a decrease in another variable.
