Pooled Sample

Definition

A pooled sample is a combined sample that includes data from two or more groups or populations. It is often used in hypothesis testing to estimate the common standard deviation for the groups being compared.

Analogy

Imagine you are planning a school event and need to estimate the average height of students in different grades. Instead of measuring each grade separately, you can create a pooled sample by randomly selecting students from all grades. This allows you to get a more accurate estimate of the overall average height without having to measure every single student.

Related terms

Independent Samples: Samples that are selected from different populations or groups and do not influence each other.

Standard Deviation: A measure of how spread out the values in a dataset are around the mean.

Variance: The average squared difference between each value in a dataset and its mean.
