Box Plots

Definition

Box plots, also known as box-and-whisker plots, are graphical representations of a set of data that display the distribution and key statistical measures such as the median, quartiles, and outliers.

Analogy

Think of a box plot as a summary of a movie. Just like how a movie trailer gives you an overview of what to expect in the film - the genre, main characters, and some exciting scenes - a box plot provides you with a quick snapshot of the data's story.

Related terms

Outliers: Data points that fall significantly outside the overall pattern or distribution.

Median: The middle value in a dataset when it is arranged in ascending or descending order.

Quartiles: Values that divide a dataset into four equal parts.
