Definition

The term nuclear refers to a family structure consisting of two parents (typically married or cohabiting) and their biological or adopted children living together under one roof.

Analogy

Imagine a nucleus at the center of an atom with protons and neutrons orbiting around it. Similarly, in a nuclear family structure, parents are at the core while children revolve around them forming a stable unit.
