REM Sleep

Definition

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep is a unique phase of mammalian slumber characterized by random movement of eyes, low muscle tone throughout the body, and vivid dreams.

Analogy

If NREM was laying down the foundation for a house then REM would be adding all those unique features that make it livable - painting walls vibrant colors (vivid dreaming), installing windows (random eye movements), etc. It's an essential part in making sure your 'house' or mind-body system functions well!

Related terms

Paradoxical Sleep: Another term for REM due to its paradoxical qualities; despite being deeply asleep our brains are highly active, almost as if we were awake.

Lucid Dreaming: A dream during which the dreamer is aware they're dreaming. These often occur during REM sleep when dreams are most vivid.

Sleep Paralysis: A temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or upon waking. This can happen when someone starts to wake up during REM sleep.
