REM rebound is the lengthening and increasing frequency and depth of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep which occurs after periods of sleep deprivation.
Imagine if you've been on a diet for a week, and then you're presented with your favorite meal. You'd likely eat more of it than usual to make up for what you missed out on. That's similar to REM rebound - your brain tries to catch up on the REM sleep it missed out on during sleep deprivation.
Sleep Deprivation: This refers to getting less than the necessary amount of sleep needed for optimal functioning.
Parasomnia: These are abnormal behaviors that occur during sleep, like sleepwalking or night terrors.
Circadian Rhythm: This is essentially your body's internal clock that regulates the timing of periods like wakefulness and sleepiness throughout the day.
