Random Sample

Definition

A random sample is a subset of individuals randomly selected by researchers from a larger population. Each individual has an equal probability of selection which helps ensure that the sample represents the population well.

Analogy

Imagine having a giant bag full of different colored marbles (representing our population). You reach into this bag without looking (to keep it random) and pull out 100 marbles (our sample). These 100 marbles should give us a good idea about what colors and proportions exist within our entire bag (population).

Related terms

Population: In statistics, it refers to total set of observations or data points that we're interested in studying.

Sample Size: The number of observations or replicates included in statistical sampling.

Sampling Error: The error caused by observing only part but not all members of some statistical population.
