Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders

Definition

These are disorders characterized by obsessive thoughts that cause distress (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors intended to reduce this distress (compulsions).

Analogy

Think about when you're playing a video game and you have to complete certain tasks in order to level up. For someone with OCD, their brain tells them they need to perform certain actions (like washing hands) over and over again just to feel "safe" or "right," much like needing to complete those tasks in the game.
