Mass

Definition

Mass refers to the amount of matter contained in an object, typically measured in units such as grams or kilograms. It is different from weight, which depends on gravitational force.

Analogy

Imagine you have two identical bags filled with marbles. If each bag has the same number of marbles, they have the same mass. Even if one bag looks bigger because it's fluffier, their masses are equal.

Related terms

Weight: The force exerted on an object due to gravity. It varies depending on location and can change if gravitational pull differs.

Inertia: The tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion, including changes in speed or direction.

Balance Scale: A device used for comparing masses by placing objects on opposite sides until equilibrium is reached.
