Long-term Potentiation (LTP)

Definition

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a long-lasting enhancement in signal transmission between two neurons that results from stimulating them simultaneously. It's a key neural basis for learning and memory.

Analogy

Think of LTP like going to the gym regularly. The more you work out, the stronger your muscles become over time. Similarly, the more often certain synapses are activated together, the stronger their connection becomes - making it easier for signals to pass between them in the future.

Hebb's Rule: This rule states that if two neurons are activated at the same time, the synapse connecting them will strengthen. It's essentially 'neurons that fire together wire together.'

Neuroplasticity: This is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Like how a city can build new roads or highways to improve traffic flow, our brains can create new pathways based on our experiences and learning.

Memory Consolidation: This is the process where our brains convert short-term memories into long-term ones. It’s like moving files from your computer’s temporary storage (RAM) into permanent storage (hard drive).
