Circadian Rhythm

Definition

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a daily cycle. They respond primarily to light and darkness in an organism's environment.

Analogy

Think of your circadian rhythm like an internal clock running in the background of your brain. It cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. This clock is set by the amount of light you get each day.
